This group has been together for over nine years. Although my daughter hasn't been with them since the very beginning, she has been lucky to be with them for the past five years. They are an amazing group of young ladies.

This year they have put together care packages for the military serving overseas, served lunch at the Saint Francis House (a homeless shelter here in Gainesville), and coordinated a Police Demonstration for younger girls that included presentations from the Mounted Horse and K-9 units. What they have accomplished is absolutely amazing.

Now, none of this could be accomplished without their inspiring leaders, Ms. Cindy and Ms. Joy. These women give hundreds of hours each year without compensation and recognition, but they truly are leaders. The girls do love and adore them. You can see it in how they speak to and about their leaders.

Today I looked at each one of them and realized that there is really so much to be grateful for. No matter how frustrating or infuriating our current world situation is, I know that there is hope. I saw it today in the faces of a dozen phenomenal women. If anyone can fix the mess we are all in, it is them. I am grateful for all of them.

Grateful Day #100

Today I am grateful for the Gainesville Community Playhouse. And if you're hungry, there are a million choices, too!

There is live music all day. The Gainesville Pops! will be doing a show at 3 pm featuring music from Broadway shows. The Gainesville Pops! show is FREE and inside the First United Methodist Church (419 NE 1st Street).

We ran into some friends we hadn't seen in a long time. For forty years I have been actively using and benefiting from the Public Library. I still love it. Right now at our home we have several books and a computer game from the library. It amazes me that there are resources and books just for the asking!

Our library - the Alachua County Public Library is amazing! You can go online, request a book and they will email you when they have procured it for you. Fabulous. They have free internet access. The research librarians have always been extremely helpful. Books, magazines, movies, music, it's all at the library and it's all FREE! Pretty soon they'll start ramping up their summer kids reading program. Please encourage your child or children to participate.

Please support your library and say thanks to your local librarians. They are all worth their weight in gold.

Grateful Day #80

Today I am grateful that we will be welcoming Father Richard Pelkey to St. Joseph's next Sunday (3/27/11). Father Richard will celebrate with us at 9 am. Everyone is welcome to attend! We'd love to have you at St. Joseph's.

Here's a bit about Father Pelkey (from the Dio-Logue):
Most recently, Fr. Richard served as the Associate Rector at Trinity Episcopal Church in Marble Falls, Texas. He earned his Bachelor of Music degree from UNLV and his Master of Divinity degree from the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest. Prior to seminary, Fr. Richard's work experience focused on youth ministry and scouting. Fr. Richard and his family are excited about their new ministry in north central Florida.

So, if you're in the Gainesville area and looking for a church home or you're just curious, come on down! Vistors are always welcome. Sunday should be exciting!

Grateful Day #79

Today I am grateful for the Hudson family. You see, they're a really amazing family and North Central Florida is going to be a little dimmer because they're moving. North Carolina, you are lucky! For the short time we've been able to know them, they've all enriched our lives. No matter what you need done and regardless of how inconvenient it might be for her, Nell always, always, always volunteers. Randall has made teaching Sunday School a real joy. I don't think I've ever met a young man with such impeccable manners - and so thoughtful and caring towards others. Baker is coming into her own with her fabulous personality and sense of fashion style. We're very excited for Chris and his new position. We know he's going to do great things and help many people.

Travel safely and remember you're always welcome here. Godspeed, Baker family.

PS... Some of you have asked me about my lapse in postings. It is not that I haven't had anything to be grateful for, on the contrary, I've had so much. Azaleas are special to me for a couple of reasons. First, when I first came to Gainesville, oh so many moons ago, it was the first time I had ever seen azaleas. Heck, that first winter here was the first real winter I had ever seen. See, I grew up in south Florida and the only thing that changed between summer and winter was about 15 degrees. It never really got cold and there certainly weren't dormant plants and trees. Stuff may have not bloomed during the "winter", but the landscape didn't get desolate in south Florida - grass didn't freeze, things weren't all brown - you get the idea... Really, I was convinced that the only difference between summer and winter in south Florida was the number of snowbirds you could count.

Well my first winter in northern Florida was quite a shock for me. I had never seen such brown-ness - sticks, twigs, empty branches, dead grass - the works. I remember the first azalea I saw bloom - it was amazing. I was sure that nothing and I mean nothing had been there the week before - certainly not this amazing bush completely covered in flowers. I think that's my favorite thing about azaleas - even if you don't know they're there, they are going to surprise you. They can look like twigs and suddenly and majestically they transform overnight.

When we bought the house we're in now, there were two azalea bushes in the backyard. The owner was going to have one removed before we moved in because it looked damaged. Obviously, it has been damaged (run over by a lawn mower, dug up by a dog, struck by lightening... something). I asked her to leave it. It is my favorite bush in the whole yard. Most of the year it looks like 4 twigs and occasionally has a few leaves, but come spring, it's magnificent. It takes my breath away to look at it. It looks great now! In a few months, it'll return to is less ostentatious self, but right now it's in all of its glory.

Second, I had a friend in college who insisted that azaleas looked good in our hair. We must have put one our hair each day that first spring. I had a Policial Science teacher that semester that thought I was quite mad showing up to class with one in my hair. Ahh.. to be carefree again.

Azaleas remind me to smile, to stop and remember to have fun. So, go pick one and put it in your hair if you choose, or if that's too much, trim one and put it in a vase on your desk, I promise, that beauty will make you smile, too.

Grateful Day #56

Today I am grateful for Father Dale's sermon from today. The Gospel reading today is one of my favorites. It is from the Book of Matthew and it always reminds me to reevaluate my priorities.

This is my favorite part: "Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?" Matthew 6: 27 - 28.

I'm amazed at how this ties into yesterday's post of "Live, Love, Laugh". Even Jesus is telling us... stop worrying... start living. It's going to be ok.

Recently I've become so overwhelmed about the state of everything. The wars, the conflict, the abuse, hunger, poverty, disease, politics - everything that I have no control over. I can hardly even watch the news or read the paper. What is this world coming to?

Well, this reminds me... don't worry - that won't make a difference. But, can I do something? I think I can. If I don't have the treasures to fix it, maybe I have some talent. I can't turn my back and pretend the mess isn't there....

Father Dale closed his sermon with this question (forgive me for the paraphrase) - "What principles guide your decisions?" Indeed, I have to think about that. What principles DO guide my decisions? When I'm really honest, I know there are times I could have done better. I could have been a better example of God's love. I'm going to have to work on that.

Hope you had a wonderful weekend and a wonderful week.

Grateful Day #55

Today I am grateful for flags - all of them. I love the ones that folks put on their homes whether they be American flags or decorative flags. Today I was running around - trying to be six places at once when I noticed a house with a flag. The house was a regular, middle-class home - not a mansion... just a home, with a flag that said, "Live, Love, Laugh". And I thought, yep, that was meant for me. It made me think ... so what if the laundry doesn't get all done or the floor doesn't get mopped. I have a dear friend who is absolutely positive that no one ever put on their tombstone, "I wish I had spent more time cleaning". For the record, our flag right now wishes everyone visiting or just driving by a "Happy St. Patrick's Day!".

So, please, today, try to Live, Love & Laugh. And remember, I'll come to your house anytime for a cup of coffee - regardless if your laundry is all folded and put away or if you've dusted.

Hope you get to live, love & laugh today and every day!

Grateful Day #54

Today I am grateful for mockingbirds. Bill's therapist is wonderful! He listens to Bill and customizes the exercises to help him stretch and heal. At first I thought he was a masochist, but I can see the real benefit he is providing. I'm not so sure Bill would agree with me all the time, but well, that's always the case, isn't it? Bill's tired when his therapist leaves, but it's a good tired.

I was reading this past weekend that muscle can atrophy in as few as 10 days. I've learned lots with this adventure, but I think the thing I absolutely understand is the importance of moving - any moving. So, like Nike says, "Just Do It.". Doesn't matter what "it" is, just do it!

Hope you get a chance to stretch your legs today in this still gorgeous Florida weather!

Grateful Day #52

Today I am grateful for my roomba. He and his staff are awesome! We were seen on time and at no time did I feel like we were rushed or not listened to. His bedside manner was amazing. He answered every question I had and even some I hadn't thought of. Additionally, he took the time to show us exactly what he was talking about. Again, more detail than I needed (After all, Captain Squeemish - is my middle name).

I think the way coolest thing he did was electronically send a prescription to our pharmacy. He pushed a button on his tablet computer (cool in and of itself)and we heard a "bing" and it was sent. Then there was another "bing" when the pharmacy accepted it. No need to take a paper prescription and then wait for it to be filled.

I am so excited that someone used technology to make my day easier. I love being able to see pictures of what folks are up to and check in on how they're doing. Facebook has become a great tool to help keep track of everything that is going on. People are so rushed these days with everything that they have to get done.. family, home, school, church, and the list goes on. It is great seeing pictures of everyone's weekend activities! Facebook doesn't begin to take the place of the human-to-human contact, but it fills a gap.

So, thank you Facebook Friends for posting all those pictures and updates! It's nice to be able to see some positivity in the world.

Have a great day, Facebook Friends!

Grateful Day #49

Today I am grateful for Gator Baseball. Well, actually, I'm grateful for all Gator sports. All of our teams are doing exceptionally well. The students, their families, coaches and staff should be very proud of themselves. Softball, Gymnastics, Swimming & Diving, Tennis, Basketball & Lacrosse are all playing this weekend. Go Gators! Have fun!

I'm especially excited about Baseball today because I'm planning to go spend a couple of hours in the beautiful Florida sunshine and soak it all in. I'm sure we'll be able to hear the cheering from the other events and the sportscasters are always good about putting up other Gator sports scores. So, I'm looking forward to just cheering.

Just remember, "It's great to be a Florida Gator... I said, it's great to be a Florida Gator!"

Hope you get to cheer for something this weekend. A huge flock flew over my house this morning. Birds can be very supportive of one another. This morning, the lead group was circling around my house waiting for the rest of the flock. Either that, or they knew I wanted to get some pictures. Maybe they're waiting to be discovered.

They are headed north. So, those of you northerns who are tired of digging your cars out of the snow, spring really is coming. The cranes' joyous honking marks that. They're headed back to your neck of the woods. Soon, it will be way too hot for them here.

For me, they are an example of a wonderful partnership between wildlife and humans. In 1967, the whooping crane was declared endangered. While still endangered, they are growing in numbers. Each year a group from Operation Migration leads the young birds with an ultralight aircraft to their wintering habits in the south. There is even Live Crane Cam on their site. When the aircraft is flying, you can see a live feed. Check it out: http://www.operationmigration.org

This year 10 cranes are being introduced into a conservation area in Louisiana. The hope is to help their population grow. At the turn of the century (1900), there were estimated to be about 150,000 birds and the lowest level was the 1940s where there were only about 15. Today, estimates place about 550 birds (both wild and in captivity). Although it's a bit scary, that there are so few birds, we've made huge strides over the past years.

The first picture is them circling to wait for their friends. The second is their friends catching up and the final one is the flock reunited and heading on out.

Hoping you get to see and hear them! They make me smile.

Grateful Day #47

Today I'm grateful for friends & Satchel's. Today I had lunch with a wonderful super friend at Satchel's. I didn't want to talk about anything related to the health-care field. No offense, health care field, I'm just tired of doctors, paperwork, pharmacies, insurance, therapists, etc...
I wanted 1 hour where anything medical was a taboo topic. I wanted to talk about anything else. And that's exactly what I got.

I am grateful that we got to sit outside in a booth, enjoy the sunshine and eat the most delicious pizza on the planet. Never been to Satchel's? Then you don't know what you're missing. If you're ever in Gainesville, make sure you visit Satchel's. It's one of the best two restaurants here in town. Don't expect anything fancy, but be sure to bring your appetite.

So, I'm grateful I got to escape for a few hours today. It was absolutely fabulous. Oh, and yes, the pizza was very good, but the company was better. :-)

Hope you get to escape from your worries for an hour or two.

Grateful Day #46

Today I am grateful for open windows. Spring is my absolute favorite time of the year. There's a cool breeze, you can open the house and everything is returning to life. The squirrels and birds are very busy. The azaleas, gerber daisies and trees are all starting to bud out. I even saw a beautiful redbud in full bloom this afternoon.

But for me, opening the window and letting the fresh air in always makes me smile. My daughter is fighting a cold and she abhors the smell of Vicks, but I just love it. I would wear it as cologne if it didn't freak everyone else out. It's one of those things that just works. You rub it on your chest and instantly you can breathe better and your coughing subsides a bit. So, we're up to all the other stuff, too... chicken noodle soup, OJ, lots of fluids, lots of rest... those are all good, but nothing beats Vicks!

Here's hoping you don't need any!

Grateful Day #43

Today I am grateful for massages. I know most folks are, too, but I'm ready for a weekend. A real weekend. I wish I had thought to tape the SuperBowl, because I think I would throw a SuperBowl Party. I know the score, but with everything that was happening, I think I only saw the first quarter... I did get to see that the MVP, Aaron Rodgers made it to my favorite place on Earth!

Guess I'm going to have to settle for something from Netflix and the 8,000 hours of stuff on the DVR. It just feels good to be to Friday, oh and it's payday, too. He's in lots of pain and therapy starts today, but he is home. He moves very, very slowly, but home is better. And I think he mostly had a good night's sleep.

Day #40 - Ok.. so the funny things that happen when you're in a hospital. Laughter is for sure something to be grateful for. So, our former Pastor is now the Chaplain on staff at the hospital. Surely, something to be grateful. It was so nice for him to pop in and visit with Bill. Lots of levels of niceness. Ok, here's the funny part. Bill had been up walking around and was climbing back into bed when Father John showed up. He was sitting there in his boxer shorts and undershirt as I was helping him into bed. I immediately thought, oh boy, I'm grateful that our Pastor has never seen me in my underwear. :-)

Day #39 - Grateful for figuring out the layout of the hospital. It takes a few days, but if you're adventurous, you can find the faster elevators and secret doors. If you or someone you love is headed to NF, let me know. I'll share my secrets - with just a small finder's fee, of course.

Day #38 - Grateful for the staff. Each and every one of the staff members we encountered were professional and courteous. There were a few with that special spark and I intend to write the Administrator and name names. They were absolutely wonderful.

Hope you have a wonderful day. Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers. The recovery road is going to be long, but there is Light.

Grateful Days #34, 35, 36, & 37

This post is covering 4 days of being grateful and here's why...

My husband fell late Thursday evening and fractured his hip. So this weekend has been one long day for me. So, since I make the rules of this journal, I can put all four together - especially since they're related.

Day #34 - I am extraordinarily grateful for the fine men and women in the Alachua County Fire Rescue and Dispatch. When we realized it was a very serious fall and called 911, each and every individual was professional, courteous, efficient, and caring. I wish I had had the foresight to ask for their names or squad numbers.

I am also grateful for the staff at the Emergency Room at North Florida Regional Medical Center. Again, our care was outstanding. The staff kept us informed of what was going on and what we should expect next.

Day #35 - Bill was admitted to NFRMC and transported to the 7th floor. I am grateful for Paris. While all the staff was very good, Paris - his nurse assistant was outstanding. She has a very calming way about her. Her smile lights up the room. Although you can tell that she is very purpose-driven, she always seems to have the time to listen.

Day #36 - I am grateful for my parents who came and got our 13 year old daughter and took her to spend the night. That was very helpful, because, hospitals can be extremely boring. There is much waiting and with her away and safe, my attention didn't have to be divided.

Day #37 - Today I am grateful for all the support we've received. We've gotten overwhelming support from family, friends, St. Joseph's, and colleagues. While I may be a bit scatter-brained to thank you properly now, please know that I am grateful for each and every one of you.

I'm back off to the hospital soon, so hopefully we'll know more.

Here's hoping you have a wonderful week!

Grateful Day #33

Today I am grateful for podcasts, specifically the @wdwtoday and @betamouse podcasts. Like most of us, I spend far too much time in the car. These two podcasts make the time much more enjoyable. If you a Disney fanatic, these are two podcasts that should be in your iPod, iPhone, iPad, etc.

WDWToday Podcast has 4 awesome hosts: Matt, Mike, Len & Mike. They are often joined by the fabulous Annette. Lately, they've been adding guests which has been very nice, too. One of the nicest things about this podcast is their unbiased opinion about Disney World. They really don't sugar coat anything. In a recent podcast, they talk about the pros and cons of the new Wild Africa Trek (it's a new tour at the Animal Kingdom). They really give the guest a good idea of what to expect. We all know that trips to WDW are expensive and by listening to them you can maximize your time and enjoyment. They have saved my family time, energy and money. They have also pointed us in the direction of hidden treasures that we might have otherwise missed! Oh, and did I mention that they are hysterical? I often find myself laughing out loud and then notice that other motorists are staring at me in horror. Their witty ways are definitely worth listening to. I listen to them every week and look forward to talking to my mom about what they all said. We've even been lucky enough to meet a couple of them. We're hoping to make it to Reunion this December to meet the others. They are absolutely super! Check them out: www.wdwtoday.com.

My other new favorite is the Betamouse Podcast. This podcast calls themselves "the geekiest Disney podcast on the planet". And they deliver. They look at all things Disney and how technology is intertwined. These are probably two of my favorite loves in the world. I always learn something from the amazing Henry, Jeff, Nate, Scott & Katie. One of their recent podcasts had two guests where they talked about how to get the best photos of fireworks. They've reviewed Epic Mickey and really delved into some of the innovations coming out of Disney. It's because of them that I'm looking forward to a manned or unmanned flying entertainment vehicle in the skies (see Episode #48 - http://betamouse.net/flying-entertainment-vehicles/) for info on that. Really fascinating and really interesting. Here's their home page: www.betamouse.net. Definitely worth subscribing!

Here's hoping you've found something entertaining and enlightening to listen to on your commute!

Stay dry and stay warm out there.

Grateful Day #33

Today I am grateful for the opportunity to teach an online class. There are many aspects that make this experience wonderful and I am grateful for them all!

First, I get to work with the greatest partner in the world - Libby. She truly is the "hostess with the mostest". I couldn't do it without her. I'm better with the "behind the scenes stuff. Left to my own, I would teach the whole hour and never tell anyone my name. Libby is the one who makes it seem personable.

Second, it's really, really fun! Teachers have really enjoyed this format and everyone is engaged. Time goes so quickly. The teachers are awesome at sharing and everyone learns from each other. I couldn't ask for a better experience.

Third, it means I have to travel less - which at this stage in my life is truly a blessing. Today we will have teachers from all 15 our of districts + teachers from South Florida. That would have been nearly impossible to accomplish in a face-to-face way. It allows us to offer professional development and meet all of the standards... less info - more often, built in follow-up, lots of interaction.

Fourth, it allows all of those folks to network. Teachers have met across county lines and can begin to broaden their network of support. It's reassuring in these times to meet folks who are experiencing similar circumstances in their world and then you get to talk about solutions.

Fifth, I get to wear one of those super-cool headsets with a microphone. I feel like a Radio DJ. (See below - lol)

Finally, it is FUN! Did I mention that already? It's worth mentioning twice. We love it!

Here's hoping you get to do something meaningful in your line of work today that is also fun!

Grateful Day #32

Today I am grateful for found change. I was moving things around in the car today and found 35 cents. It's not much - not even enough to get a soda, but it made me happy. It's like when you put on a coat for the first time of the winter and find money in the pocket. It's just cool. I even like it when I find pennies on the ground. If they're heads up, I pick them up. If not, I turn them over for someone else to find. "Find a penny, pick it up, all day long, you'll have good luck".....

When I was teaching at a high school, I always picked up change and tossed it into a cup. At the end of the year, I always had about $100. Not bad.

Hope you find more than you loose.

Grateful Day #31

Today I am thankful for the times I get to spend with my family at Walt Disney World. On Friday night and Saturday we got to spend some time together at WDW. It's always fun. Luckily, we go often enough that we don't have to do every single thing on each trip - no commando touring. We do a few things, usually try at least one new thing, and generally just hang out.

This trip we got to see the new nighttime show in the Magic Kingdom. There are some great pictures here: Guest Images Come to Life on Cinderella Castle at Walt Disney World.

Ok, I'll admit it. When I heard about this year's promotion, I thought Disney was phoning it in. Comparing this to past two years with the "What will you celebrate?" and "Give a Day, Get a Disney Day.", I thought, that's it. Disney has peaked. Boy, was I wrong. The light show was absolutely amazing! I was totally amazed by the show. To top it off, we met the nicest Cast Member - Jim - who works the Main Street Parade/Crowd Control. He was great. He told us some really interesting things and I learned lots. I'm ready to go back.

Now, even though the show was fantastic,an absolute must see - the best part was being there with the family.

Hope you get to do something fun with your family this week!

Grateful Day #29

Today I am very, very Grateful for Emergency Managers. My Dad was sworn in as the Treasurer of FEPA (Florida Emergency Preparedness Association - http://www.fepa.org/) a few days ago. I was lucky enough to see it and meet some of the other Emergency Managers from around the state of Florida. I was absolutely amazed by all the work they do to keep the citizens of Florida safe. I mean, I knew that they worked very hard during hurricane season, but there's so much I wasn't aware of. Emergency Managers and their staff members are a group of high energy work-a-holics that are constantly trying to keep ahead of Mother Nature and any other cause of disaster (e.g., the Gulf oil spill). Listening to them, I was struck as to how little I knew. I had no idea of all the "behind the scenes" things they do each and every day to ensure that we are going to be ok. There are all kinds of exercises they work on together to prepare for the unknown (no small task), as well as, maintaining rigorous certifications and working to support each other.

Of course, I was proud of my Dad. He's awesome, right? But each and every one of you should be proud of your county's Emergency Manager. They are an amazing group of folks. They truly have your very best interests at heart. So, the next time they ask you to evacuate, please listen. They know what they're doing. They have trained to make sure you are safe.

It's a few months until hurricane season starts, but it's never too early to make sure your emergency kits are in order. (Don't know what should go in your kit? Here's a list - http://www.fema.gov/areyouready/assemble_disaster_supplies_kit.shtm). Let's help them by being ready. :-)

Here's hoping you only get to meet them in a social setting.

That's my Dad in the camel colored sports coat to the right of the Flag. I got to spend the evening with my Mom and my friend, Libby. We had a really nice dinner and got to see a show. It was fabulous. Sometimes I don't appreciate how lucky I am to have such great friends and family. I'm busy worrying about what's next...what needs to be done... etc.

Last night I felt like I was truly in the moment. I wasn't worried about anything else. It was relaxing and refreshing.

I hope you get to have some "now" time, too. Take some this weekend... the laundry will always be there, so will the dishes... and I'm positive that no one laid on their death bed and said, "I wish I'd spent more time cleaning the house."

Have a wonderful day!

BTW - if you're counting, I'm behind... If you travel any toll roads in Florida, you know what a great device this is. If you don't, this pass allows you to go through tolls and then takes money from your account. It's a time saver and for me a sanity-saver. I'm terrible about having cash on hand. I really am bad. My daughter needed $3 for school this moring and I didn't have it. My grandma has always said I should keep at least $20 in cash for emergencies... But if I know it's there, I just spend it.

Getting back to the Sunpass. When I was in college (just a short time ago - lol), I helped my friend move from Tampa back to South Florida. Well, we got on the Turnpike. We're driving along and she says, "uh oh." which is never a good way to start a road trip... Anyway, neither of us had any cash. So, we immediately got off at the next exit. We had searched the car for any loose change and probably found 30 cents - not nearly enough. Now we were lost in the middle of no where with no idea of how to get to I-95. And, of course, this was long before cell phones. Eventually we got back on track.

That didn't teach me to carry cash, but I was one of the first people I know to get a Sunpass. I love it! It takes away one worry for me. So, just like the ad, I can sail through the toll plazas without a care in the world.

Here's hoping some technology has taken away some stress for you!

Grateful Day #25

Today I am grateful for new beginnings. My Grandpa Mike used to say, "Any day that I look down and I'm above ground, well, that's a good day!" I think that's so true! So many folks I know dread or hate birthdays. I wish I could persuade them to enjoy them more. I mean, I know, it's another year. We're all getting older. Things don't work the way they used to. I get that, but I also get that I have lots of experiences and memories that I wouldn't trade for anything. Birthdays let us think about what we've accomplished and look forward and think about what the next year might bring. Birthdays are a time to CELEBRATE!

One of my best friends celebrates birthdays in the best way possible. Libby doesn't just celebrate the day, she celebrates the "season of her birthday". This encompasses about 3 weeks on either side of the "real" day. She's always so happy and so enthusiastic about the "season". I really love that about her. I hope she doesn't mind that I just shared that with you, but if you want to celebrate with her, start about mid-November and continue past New Year's Day!

Today we get to go to a joint birthday party. My wonderful stepson is turning 30 and his Grandpa is turning 80! That's 110 birthdays between them! I think that's worth celebrating. I'm grateful for them all!

Oh.... and there's cake, too. What could be bad about that? Since I helped to make the cake, I can let you in on a little secret.... if you like frosting, get an edge piece, we had to "even" them out some.

Hope you celebrate lots and lots of birthdays and get to eat lots of cake!

Grateful Day #22

Today I am grateful for quiet Saturday mornings. I have decided that I do not need an alarm clock as long as we have our dog and cat. You see, they know exactly when it is 6:15 am. The cat starts by scratching at the garage door to get outside and as soon as the dog knows it's safe, she jumps on the bed to announce the coming of the morning! She's very excited too.

So, I got up this morning and let them both outside. Now in all fairness, I'm sure they could would do it themselves if they could figure out how to unlock the deadbolt and open the door......

As I let I them out I saw something I haven't seen in days (and it seems like months).... the SUN! Very beautiful. Nice and sunny. Cold, but SUNNY!

So, I grabbed a cup of coffee, and the paper and headed to read them in the peace and quiet. Everyone else is still asleep for a little bit.

Who knew that the this equation would bring such happiness...

SUN + COFFEE + QUIET = BLISS

Hoping you have sun in your day, too!

Grateful Day #21

Today I am grateful for robins. This time of year, the landscape is dreary at best. There are vast expanses of dead, dormant or hibernating foliage. Nothing makes me happier than robins. I've only seen a few, so I know they're on their way here for their winter sojourn. They really brighten up a field. I absolutely LOVE this hotel! My work brings me there about once a month. The folks at the Ocala Hilton are like the folks in the show "Cheers" who always know your name. However, the folks at the Ocala Hilton are even better! They know your name and they know your preferences. Norma always gets me close to my colleague - even when the hotel is very full. Brenda, one of the most awesome housekeepers in the world remembers that I am allergic to the down pillows and always has foam ones for me. Cos, Sherry & Sally in Arthur's restaurant downstairs always remember that my colleague prefers iced tea with her breakfast. And, honestly, my favorite part of the stay is unwinding in the Thoroughbred Lounge with Donna. Donna always has a funny story and a kind word. The Ocala Hilton is like home... wait, I take that back... they're even better than home! At the Ocala Hilton I am treated like a Princess. What excites me is to watch one of his speeches (this one is my favorite: http://youtu.be/PbUtL_0vAJk) and think how far we've come as a nation in the 40+ years since his assassination. What does trouble me, however, is how far we still have to go. This year I have pledged to reflect each day on at least one thing for which I am grateful. I'm starting to feel that is not enough. Reflection without action is just noise. So, I am pondering how to bring about those changes in my life and my community. I am trying to live in a way that represents those ideals. I find that when I do, I feel better about myself, my family and my community. It really is in the giving that the joy is found.

Thank you, Dr. King. May we finally arrive at a day when all really does mean all.

Grateful Day #16

Today I am grateful for books - all books, especially books that transport you to an adventure or to a mysterious place or let you be a superhero - whatever interests you. My most recent obsession is the Harry Potter series. I'm late to the game, very late. When they first came out, my daughter was a baby. I was very busy reading things like Good Night Moon by Margaret Wise Brown and Moo Baa La La La by Sandra Boynton. These are wonderful books! I really enjoyed them the first 1000 times I read them.

Anyway, fast forward 13 years. I felt like I had missed out on something spectacular by not reading the Harry Potter series. It seemed there were references to Harry Potter, Hogswarts, and Dumbledore everywhere I went. It was like not being part of an inside joke. So, I began the series about 6 months ago. I absolutely love it. I just finished book 5 - Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. I will begin book 6 this evening. I can't wait to see what Harry, Ron and Hermione are up to this time. They have a real knack for finding trouble and very creative ways to find their way out.

I hear Harry calling... gotta go... can probably get in a chapter or two before dinner.

I hope you have a book or character that transports you to somewhere magical - even if for only a short time.

Grateful Day #15

Today I am grateful for the Girl Scouts and Girl Scout Leaders. Girl Scouting has been a wonderful experience for my daughter. This weekend she is helping to organize a camp for younger girls. Her troop is running one of the stations - games. The girls had to develop the activities, plan for them, figure out what they'd need and today they have to implement. She's had tons of fun in the scouts and learned lots. She's been in two historic reenactments in St. Augustine, as well. (That's what the picture is from.) The leadership skills that the girls have gained are invaluable.

Her leaders are phenomenal. The amount of time and energy they pour into the events are to be commended. As with all youth leaders, they are the first ones at every event and the last ones to leave. Their dedication is inspiring. Christina had to a project on an inspiring leader and she picked her Girl Scout Troop Leader, Ms. Cindy.

The girls have done tons of volunteering, too. They've prepared and served food at a homeless shelter. They have visited nursing homes at the holidays and sang for the residents. Every year they send 20 - 30 care packages to troops serving overseas. These experiences have really helped Christina to see the world in a much broader view.

Now that almost all of the girls are in high school (and will be by next year), they are planning an overseas trip for 2013! It's pretty exciting.

So, when you see a Girl Scout selling cookies, buy a box if you can. It's a wise investment. :-)

Enjoy your Saturday!

Grateful Day #14

Today I am grateful for two things. My brother and my car radio. Ok. Here's how they're related. Today, I was driving down 13th Street enjoying the scenery and the beautiful sunshine. As I was, one of my most favorie songs came on the radio. Actually, it was the song I mentioned a few days ago - Man in the Mirror by Michael Jackson. Thanks 98.5 KTK! Anyway, I could not resist the urge to sing along. Now, I love this song and I was singing it very loudly with my head keeping beat to the rhythm and I was drumming on the steering wheel. Great, huh?

It was until I stopped at a stop light. I noticed the car full of people next to me, looking and staring in horror. They couldn't hear me (there's something for THEM to be grateful for), but I must have looked a bit silly. Anyway, what happened next must have truly worried them. I burst out laughing. Not a polite giggle, mind you - a deep bend over, hold your stomach belly laugh. See, I instantly remembered something my brother said to me long ago. He hypothesized that when people get into their cars, they forget that the windows are made of GLASS. Somehow, when we get in our cars, we think we're invisible to the folks around us. And, apparently we are not. C'est la vie.

When I finished laughing, I sang along some more and thought about my brother.

Here's hoping there's a song, some sunshine and some laughter in your immediate future.

Grateful Day #13

Today I am thankful for pansies. Pansies are my favorite flower. One of the reasons that I love them so much is that they look bright and cheerful when the weather is bitter cold. All of the lawns, flowers and trees are dismal looking right now. Pansies are graciously supplying the only spot of color in our yard! They remind me that spring will come. We will all get warmer.

Today's paper said that there was snow on the ground in every continental state except Florida. Yep, Google. When I think about all that Google does to make my life easier, faster and better integrated, I am appreciative. Think about it, the term "google it" has become a regular part of our vocabulary. Have you ever Googled yourself? Come on, you know you have.... Google's quick, reliable and it works. In a world that is tech-driven, it's very reassuring to find something that just works.

I started thinking about the google apps that I use in any given day... I use Google Docs for work (I can't even imagine not having them), I use Google reader to sort and update my RSS feeds, I have a Gmail account... the list goes on and on....

I think one of the things that I like most about Google is that they don't sit and rest. They're always working on something new - a new tool, a new way to integrate something... always moving always adapting.

Ok, and here's one more reason that I love google. I love it when the very talented artists do something creative with the Google logo. Below are two of my favorites, but it always brings a smile to my face when I launch my browser (Chrome, of course), and google has a new icon.

So, thank you Google. Keep up the great work @google. I, for one, appreciate it!

Hoping all of your tech integrates easily and works well!

Grateful Day #11

Today, I am grateful for school Crossing Guards. As I was driving my daughter to school this morning, we encountered the three Guards we see each day. They have a tough job, but I have never seen them without a smile or friendly wave. This morning it was about 38 degrees and raining. It was cold! Those ladies were again out, looking as if they were on top of the world! They were making sure that all of those middle schoolers got safely across the very busy street and into the warm and dry building that was waiting for them.

When Christina used to walk to elementary school, we got to know the Crossing Guard. She was awesome, too! She had great big Mickey Mouse hands that she used to direct traffic. Sometimes when we're out extra early we still see her. She's still smiling.

All of the school crossing guards are there day in and day out, cold, hot, rain, sleet and usually, with a smile! Amazing!

Here's hoping you are warm and dry!

Grateful Day #10

Today, I am grateful for my daughter, Christina. St. Joseph's is a very small church (about 100 families) and is located just west of Gainesville. We have been attending there for 14 years. It just feels like family. I have watched children go from being Baptized all the way to heading off to college! Several of the students who have been in my Sunday School classes over the years are now professionals. One former student just got married a few weeks ago. Our church, although small in size, makes up for it in spirit and heart. No one is ever turned away. Our congregation routinely works together to help those in need - sometimes even our own members. When I sit in Church, I am remind to let the petty things in life go. That there are much more important things to be done.

Our congregation recently lost one of our matriarchal members. Our loss is God's gain. It is heartwarming to watch our congregation work to support her family members. It's going to be tough without her, but at least we still have each other.

Finally, I am crushed by the tragedy that unfolded yesterday in Arizona. My thoughts and prayers are with all the family members of all that were involved. My hope is that each of them has a support system that will help them pick up the pieces and continue to live in a way that honors their loved ones.

So, tomorrow, when I'm irritated with traffic, or an email, or something else, I will force myself to stop, and think.... let go of the petty stuff. There's much more important work to be done.

So, as Michael Jackson says in one of my all-time favorite songs,
"I'm starting with the man in the mirror
I'm asking him to change his ways
And no message could have been any clearer
If you wanna make the world a better place
Take a look at yourself and then make a change..."

Peace.

Grateful Day #8

Today, I'm grateful for Christmas lights - all of them. From the houses that go all out and attract attention from far away, to the houses that put up a single strand in their front hedge. While our display falls somewhere in between, I love them all! Today, I'll be taking ours down. Always a bittersweet time for me. I love having everything packed up neatly and nicely (surprise), but it's just a bit dimmer outside in the evenings.

I thought about leaving them up all year long, but then they wouldn't be special, would they? Only 315 days until I can put them up again without feeling guilty, but I bet I can't wait that long....

Hoping you have a wonderful weekend!

Grateful Day #7

Today I am thankful for hamburgers, laughter and Magic Eraser. Last night we had hamburgers for dinner, really good hamburgers. The hamburgers were a gift from my Aunt & Uncle and were from Omaha Steaks. These hamburgers were worthy of A-1 Steak Sauce. So, last night, after all was set, we got out the A-1 Peppercorn. I shook the bottle up and well, lo and behold, the cap wasn't on tight, so A-1 went everywhere - all over me, the dog (who is always underfoot at dinner), the walls, the refrigerator, the sliding glass door... you get the idea. Well, everyone looked at me and I just started to laugh... (not a maniacal, I'm going to get you my pretty, laugh, but a it'll be ok laugh) Screaming and crying wouldn't have helped. I had to wash my hair and change before I could eat, but dinner was delicious. Actually I've washed my hair twice since then and I think I have all the peppercorns out....

As to the Magic Erasers, they took all the A-1 off the walls. I was scared that the walls would be stained, but they're not. I think we've got all the A-1 off, but we'll see.

Oh - and as for the dog, she got a bath, too. So, if you're in the neighborhood, drop by - we're all clean - even the dog and the kitchen is just about spotless.

TGIF!

Grateful Day #6

Today, I am grateful for two things: my college Dentist, Dr. Avriett & unsecured wireless access. Seem unrelated? Well, actually, they're not today. When I was a student at UF, I somehow got connected with the School of Dentistry and had Dr. Avriett as my dentist. He was in his final year of study and I needed some work done - a match made in heaven? Almost. He was absolutely the coolest Dentist I have ever met. He made me no longer fear dentists. Actually, except for paying at the end, I don't even mind going anymore. Here's his secret - I'm sharing it with you! In his "office" (aka - a cubicle on the 4th floor of Shands), he had posted a very serene picture of a deserted island - looked like exactly the place you'd want to be instead of the dentist's chair. And, he told me to imagine that the light they use to look at your teeth was the sun. So, you see, when I go to the dentist (even though it' not the same one), I still envision that picture, feel the breeze and bask in the sunlight while I'm laying there. I don't even feel guilty about laying in the "sun". It's absolutely fabulous.

Now, the unsecured wireless is a bonus at my dentist's office. It's not their office, I can see their secured wireless in my list on my iPhone. But, while I was waiting for my Caribbean vacation destination and sunny skies (which were not anywhere to be found in Gainesville), I got to sit in the waiting room and play Words with Friends, Chess with Friends, check out Twitter and the like. Since my dentist is in an office complex, it does make one wonder who has an unsecured wireless router, but, I certainly enjoyed their generosity and hospitality.

So, all in all, it was a pleasant lunch hour. I hope your visits to the dentist are pleasant, too! Just remember Dr. Avriett's secret - which is now yours, too!

Grateful Day #5

Today I am thankful for our pets. It rained all night. Although it changes my plans for today, it is a much needed blessing.

The Gators finished out their football season with a win over Penn State. I have been a fan for more than 20 years. I have seen great seasons and I have seen really, really bad seasons. Yesterday, I saw something I haven't seen much this season. I saw a never say die spirit. I saw heart and I saw determination. Thank you, team, for coming through for your coach. Thank you for sending him out a winner.

Happy Sunday!

My New Year's Resolution for 2011

I have decided that I am going to post each and every day for 2011, something for which I am grateful.

One of my favorite quotes is: "Be the change you want to see in the world." ~ Mahatma Ghandi. Therefore, I am going to strive this year to be positive and look for the silver lining.

Installment #1, today I am grateful for my best friend, Paula. Today is her birthday and we have been friends for 30 years! She is wonderful, generous, and loving. I'm lucky to have her in my life!

I sincerely wish all of you a happy, healthy and prosperous 2011. May all your wishes and dreams come true!

Until tomorrow....

No Future Left Behind

Social Media -
